Eight helicopters are being used to fight a fire in a forest in the Taieri Gorge on Tuesday.

The blaze started mid-afternoon in a logged area of Mt Allan, belonging to Wenita Forest Products, about 35km northwest of Dunedin.

The fire has since jumped to an area of standing trees and has destroyed about 30 hectares.

Wenita chief executive David Cormack says houses in the area have been evacuated on Tuesday night.

Mr Cormack says it is likely that a logging operation started the fire.

A rural fire spokesperson says one side of the blaze is coming under control and fire fighters are trying to contain the rest until the westerly wind drops
