Azerbaijan — A howling winter storm barreled through the southern and southeastern Azerbaijan, hitting the residential settlements with fierce winds.

The far-reaching storm system stretched from Lerik to Yardimli, snapping electric power and telephone poles, and leaving some parts of southeastern regions of Lenkeran, Masalli and Astara without electricity, said Habil Malikov and Etibar Ferrukhov, ?Deputies of Lerik and Yardimli Local Executive Authorities. They are also chairmen of local commission for emergency situations.

Strong wind also threw away attics of several houses, including schools and public buildings.

Besides, fierce wind triggered fire in Birkandul forest 40km off Lerik. ?Locals and fire-fighters are struggling to put out the rapidly ripping through fire. Fire has not been extinguished yet.

Lerik hydrometeorological center told APA that wind speed is 45 m/s and weather is colder than normal.

The emergency forces of the both regions have been mobilized to eliminate the damage and aftermath of storm.
