Australia —

A man has died while protecting his home from a bushfire in Queensland.

An Emergency Services spokeswoman said the elderly man died during a grass fire but further details were not immediately available.

Fire crews are battling several huge grass fires including one north of Brisbane.

An Emergency Services statement said a fire at Smiths Road, Kurwongbah broke out at about 1.30pm (AEST) on Wednesday and was moving slowly in a south-easterly direction.

Helicopters are conducting air observation and are expected to start water-bombing soon but no properties are under threat.

Water-bombing is also being organised for another large grass fire burning at Mt Forbes, southwest of Brisbane.
