Bush fires destroy jungles in Sri Lanka’s upcountry

Sri Lanka — The villagers of the Aluthgamagama in Bindunuwewa, Bandarawela are coming to the edge of being displaced as the bush fires which erupted in the area last night are spreading further more.

According to the Bandarawela police the bush fires, erupted inside the Aththanapitiya jungles last night now has reached the edge of Aluthgamagama village in Bindunuwewa.

The Forest officers said that they are unable to control the fire as it is spreading fast due to the prevailing dry weather conditions in the area.

Nearly 400 acres of the Aththyanapitiya jungle has already been destroyed by this bush fire at the moment, Forest Department confirmed.

The officials have instructed the Bandarawela police to evacuate the villagers if the bush fires spread further.

The Forest officers are attempting to control the fire with the assistance of Air Force, police and the residents in the area.
