Australia — Victoria’s animal emblem is fighting to survive in the wake of the state’s bushfire disaster.

The Leadbeater possum was only recently rediscovered after being thought extinct for 60 years.

Sarah Blair, from the Friends of the Leadbeater Possum, says most of the habitat of the possum has been wiped out

“There were 30 nest boxes up there, and they knew there were a hundred individuals using those boxes,” she says.

“Of the 30 boxes, only three survived the fire, and in each of those boxes were surviving Leadbeaters.

“Six possums survived.”
