Nagaland, India — Minister for Forest MC Konyak today said that he has identified forest fires as a major problem in the state especially during the dry season. The minister has asked the officers to take a more proactive role in tackling this problem.

Speaking at a meeting of the department of Forests, Ecology and Environment & Wildlife here today, the minister also disclosed that there is proposal to declare the year 2010 as the year of plantation. He has directed the department’s officers to work out modalities and formulate an action plan in this regard.

Konyak pointed to the need for new approaches for planning and so invited suggestion to streamline the planning process in the department.

Touching on the importance of conserving ecological balance in Nagaland, the minister urged the field officers to provide technical expertise in this matter and pointed out the importance of forest replenishment not only in the context of maintaining the ecological balance but also in mitigating the problem of climate change. The meeting was also attended by the Dr. K. Sashidar, IFS the additional PCCF, commissioner & secretary forest L. Kire and all the executive field officers of the department.
