USA — The Cherokee County, Kan., Sheriff’s Department and the Kansas State Fire Marshall’s office are investigating the death of a Galena man Thursday, which may have been related to a grass fireThe Galena Fire Department responded to a grass fire at 3:43 p.m. Thursday in the Union Chapel area, according to fire Chief Bill Hall. Three trucks responded to the fire.

After the fire was put out, the body of Jim Williams, 72, 3749 S.E. 105th Street, was discovered, Hall said.

“Somebody noticed he was gone and found him laying down in the field near his house,” Hall said.

While he noted that Williams’ clothes had been burned off, Hall said the body was being sent to Topeka for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Hall said investigators also are trying to determine whether the fire started on Williams’ property and spread from there.
