USA — Teenagers smoking marijuana started a fire that burned one acre in Little McGonigle Canyon Monday night, according to Officer Gaylon Sells of San Diego Police Department. The fire was started on Torrey Meadows Drive off Camino Del Sur at around 6 p.m. in the canyon, which sits on the eastern edge of Carmel Valley.

Several fire engines responded to the scene and a helicopter was able to douse flames in a nighttime drop, Sells said.

Sells said rumors swirled on Tuesday that the fire was started by migrant workers living in the canyon but a witness spotted the teenagers that night and a homemade pipe was found on the scene. The witness was able to take a photograph of the license plate of one of the teenager’s cars so Sells said they should be hearing from authorities shortly.
