Australia — Campers were evacuated from their tents as a bushfire edged towards to their location yesterday afternoon.

Campers at the Coolendel camping ground at Burrier, west of Nowra, were prepared for evacuation shortly before 3pm when a fire broke out in hills above the site.

With concerns about the fire spreading closer to campers, people were evacuated from their camp sites and taken to a central evacuation area.

Simon and Fiona Tillbrook had arrived at the site just a short time before the evacuation order and were in the process of setting up their tents when told to stop what they were doing.

But the mood was still “very casual,” Mrs Tillbrook said, with no one panicking.

Mr Tillbrook said the police helped keep everyone calm.

“I’m very impressed with the way the police handled things,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rural Fire Service crews were battling the blaze, which was burning on a 200-metre front and threatening two derelict homes.

By about 4pm the fire was under control, and relieved campers were allowed to return to their camping sites.
