Australia — The Victorian government has launched a campaign to recruit 500 extra Project Firefighters.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the recruits would mainly assist with track clearing, road maintenance, controlled burns and fire recovery activities.

“The Project Firefighters will join over 1,300 permanent, on-ground firefighters in preparing for and suppressing bushfires in our parks and forests,” Mr Jennings said.

Successful applicants must hold a current manual driver’s licence and pass a fitness and medical test to ensure they can cope with the physically demanding work.

Most Project Firefighters work from November/December until the end of March.
