A fire has destroyed a timber factory at Fort Gale in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Emergency Services says the fire started in the veld before engulfing the Highbury timber factory.

It took firefighters nearly seven hours to extinguish the blaze. There were no injuries as staff were on a break when the fire started. But the future is bleak for about a hundred employees, as their livelihood has been destroyed.

Bulldozers from other factories in the area were called in to help remove some of the timber to save it from the flames. The loss of building material stored inside the factory is estimated at a million rand.
