The specialised forest fire-fighting service in Andalucía, INFOCA, now says that more than 50 hectares were destroyed in the fire which broke out in the hills of the Dehesa del Generalife peri-urban park in Granada city on Tuesday. Initial estimates put it at 35.

Teresa Jiménez, the regional government’s representative for Granada province, told the press that it appears to have been started by a spark from a machine which was being used to clear undergrowth nearby – one of the measures used to prevent forest fire.

Seventy five hectares were destroyed in the same area by two fires in 2005, both of them caused by negligence.
