Malaysia — The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department has all the necessary equipment to face the possibility of forest fires which might break due to the El Nino phenomenon, expected this month.
Its Director, Haron Tahir, said the department has the facilities to douse flames in case of forest fires in the State, where most of the forest are on peat soil and has acacia trees.
“Based on experience in facing the phenomenon previously, we are ready with a special equipment to face the situation and ensure a more effective operation,” he told reporters after visiting the Sandakan Fire station, here, Saturday.
He said the department was monitoring cases of forest fires in the State, especially in the districts of Sipitang, Beaufort, Tawau and Kudat.
So far, he said, the situation was under control with no case of serious forest fire due to the El Nino phenomenon being reported.
Haron said all fire stations had been instructed to be on the alert and to monitor forest fires reported in their respective areas.
He said the department would work with other government agencies in making the necessary preparations for the El Nino.
