Bushfire closes section of Overland Track

Australia — The northern section of the Overland Track in Tasmania’s centralhighlands has been closed because of a bushfire west of Cradle Mountain.

The Parks and Wildlife Service says the fire was startedby lightning in the Fury River Valley on Monday, although it was only detectedyesterday afternoon.

It has now burnt out about 50 hectares and is not yetunder control.

About 85 walkers north of Pelion Hut are being movedfurther south along the track as a precautionary measure.

Stuart Lennox from the Parks and Wildlife Service saysthe weather forecast is favourable.

“It’s very overcast in the park at the moment… [wehope the] situation will be over in the next 12 to 24 hours.

Three helicopters are being used to water bomb the fire.
