Australia — One house and several sheds were reduced toashes in the Stony Rises, near Camperdown, yesterday as fire swept across atleast 2000 hectares.

A smoky haze spread across the region as almost 200 firefighters battled theblaze which forced residents to flee or make the decision to stay and defendtheir properties.

Last night Pomborneit residents were put on high alert as a fresh fire frontthreatened their homes and the local hall.

The Princes Highway was closed to traffic and  train services weredisrupted.

The cause of the fire is believed suspicious.

It was a horror weekend across the state with blazes raging in the state’snorth-east and Gippsland continuing to burn, stretching already exhaustedfirefighters, who had been on the front for 11 days.
