New Zealand — Stubble burning is being blamed for a series of grass fires that have kept firefighters on the hop in mid-Canterbury this afternoon.

One near Winchdale is causing concern as it has required the evacuation of a couple of houses, but firefighters have also had to deal with blazes in the Selwyn and Ashburton districts.

Fire Service spokesman Mark Chubb says the causes have been identified as stubble and other open air burns.

Mark Chubb says north west winds are fanning the fires.
