Parts of Australia are still on bushfire alert, as the country braces for a hot, dry New Year’s Day.
A fire ban is in place across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia and firefighters from the three states are on high alert.
Rural Fire Service Commissioner, Phil Koperberg, says temperatures in some areas are expected to reach 43 degrees today.
A fire in Victoria’s Illawara state forest has burned more than 4,000 hectares and destroyed five houses.
Deputy Chief Officer of Victoria’s Country Fire Authority, Geoff Evans, says the fire is still burning out of control and 300 firefighters are battling the fire.
