A peat fire in Mukim Tanjung Dua Belas near here has destroyed some 100 hectares of forest reserve.

The blaze, which had raged undetected over the last few days, is expected to take another week to be extinguished.

Cyberjaya deputy fire chief Hussin Abdullah said only about nine hectares of land were still on fire.

It was not immediately known what caused the fire but the current dry spell had helped it spread.

Hussin said 30 firemen from eight stations had dug firebreaks surrounding the area to prevent the blaze from spreading. Water pumps are also being used to channel water from nearby canals to douse the fire.

Despite the fire covering a large area, very little smoke could be seen, which explained why the blaze had remained undetected for several days.

Fires were also reported in Cyberjaya, Tanjung Karang, Batang Berjuntai, Sabak Bernam and Sungai Besar.
