Seria – Kuala Belait and Seria are experiencing a slight haze due to a change in wind direction which has brought smoke from major forest fires in Miri, Sarawak.

Belait Fire Services officials are reminding members of the public not to conduct open burning and to avoid irresponsible acts such as indiscriminately tossing away lit cigarettes in forest areas which could spark a forest fire after an incident last week in which a two-kilometre stretch along Seria bypass was hit by a minor fire.

Since most forest areas in the district are peat forests, the continuous smoke caused by open burning or other irresponsible acts would worsen the haze situation particularly along the Seria Lumut bypass based on past experience.

However visibility is still clear and the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) air reading remains good, which is still below 50.

The Meteorological Service of the Civil Aviation Department had predicted that Brunei Darussalam will be experiencing hazy days if forest fires in Indonesia grow in size and the southwest wind flow persists. — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
