BRITISH holidaymakers were among hundreds of terrified campers evacuated as a forest fire raged in the south of France.

The blaze ravaged 500 acres of parched woodland in the Var region on the Mediterranean coast, coming within half a mile of four packed campsites.

More than 1,700 people fled when clouds of acrid smoke began billowing across the sites late on Thursday.

People were given temporary accommodation by the local authorities as 800 firefighters and two helicopters doused the flames.

The campers were allowed back to their tents yesterday.

Officials last night warned tourists across the south of France that there was a “high risk” of more forest fires during the dry summer months.
