A LARGE fire burnt down six hectares of pine forest in the Ayia Vavatsiniaarea yesterday. The fire broke out just before 5pm in a ravine that was 500metres deep and home to the pine trees. It threatened to spread to the nearbyMachairas forest.
According to the Fire Service, a farmer noticed the fire that was spreading fastand sounded the alarm.
Fire fighters from the Nicosia and Lefkara Fire Stations, the Forest Department,the Game Service and EMAK Kophinou arrived on the scene with seven vehicles.Local residents helped with their tractors to bring the fire under control.
Two fire fighting helicopters leased by the Cyprus Republic and one from theBritish Bases also helped to put out the fire.
