About eight hectares of land near Putra Perdana and Cyberjaya was engulfed in a peat fire today, creating visibility problems for kilometres around.

Archive Since 1991 Smoke from the fire reduced visibility at the nearby Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang but did not affect flight operations, an airport spokesman said.

The fire was reported at 2pm today and 40 firemen from the Putrajaya and Cyberjaya fire stations were despatched to battle the flames.

A Cyberjaya Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said firemen managed to create a firebreak to contain the blaze but were unable to put it out.

“As with all peat fires, it is difficult to fight.

“It usually takes many hours of hard work before a peat fire can be doused,” he said.
