A peat fire in the Far North has finally been tamed after firefighters from around the country spent 10 days and thousands of hours fighting it.
Yesterday, just of a handful of patrolmen were on watch at the 80ha area in Kaimaumau, about 30km north of Kaitaia, in case of flare-ups.
Eight hot spots were found at the weekend and thousands of litres of water poured over them.
“Now it’s a matter of keeping an eye on it,” said Department of Conservation spokesperson Carolyn Smith.
The blaze began on private land and burrowed into the peat soil, burning underground.
