ROME – An Italian Canadair fire-fighting aircraft has crashed into a building near the coast of Tuscany while fighting a blaze, the ANSA news agency reported, without saying if there were casualties.

Witnesses said the seaplane appeared to be in difficulty and appeared to be trying to land in the sea when it caught fire and crashed near Forte dei Marmi, a resort about 300 kilometres (190 miles) northwest of Rome.

The plane, which normally has a crew of two, had left Rome’s Ciampino airport in the afternoon to help local firefighters damp down a blaze. – AFP
