JANUARY 6, 2005 — Several fire departments worked forhours to control a stubborn forest fire in Brunswick County.

Authorities say the fire started around noon Wednesday in the woods offDogwood Road near Leland. Crews from the Leland, Acme-Delco and Winnabow firedepartments, among others, fought the fire.

Early on, the smoke came dangerously close to some homes, and ithad people in the area worried.

“There’s a lot of trees and of course, this time of year, it’s realdry. A lot of dead limbs from the ice storm we had earlier last year, butthe wind was blowing to the northeast, so I could tell we were in no dangerat this point,” said neighbor Allan Hilburn.

There’s no word yet what sparked the fire.
