Vietnamese scientist develops powder for forest fire fighting

VNA,12 November 2004

Ho Chi Minh City, (VNA) – A Vietnamese scientist, Nguyen Van Thanh, has successfully produced a kind of powder that can be used to control big forest fires.

Thanh said the powder will change into liquid at over 100 degree C and when coming into contact with flaming objects, the liquid will boil and release carbon dioxide, putting out the flame. A layer of porous powder will form on the surface of the burnt objects, preventing them from catching fire again. The powder can be dissolved in rains to become fertiliser, causing no harm to the environment.

One kg of the powder costs only about 4,000-5,000 VND to make.

Thanh has applied for a patent on his invention.-Enditem
