ASEANconference reviews agreements on trans-national haze pollution

Vietnam has proposed that member countries ofthe Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) focus on trans-national hazeprevention and establishment of sub-regions, such as the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodiaco-operation to help each other in this field.

The proposal was made during the 21st meeting of ASEAN SeniorOfficials on the Environment-Haze Technical Task Force (ASOEN-HTTF) in Hanoi onMonday.

The conference reviewed the implementation of ASEAN agreements on trans-nationalhaze pollution and the action plan for haze prevention, which were reached underthe “ASEAN Vision 2020” initiative.

Participants discussed five major issues including prevention and control ofhaze in the region; forest fire fighting and prevention; ASEAN muddy soilmanagement strategy; and preparations for the 11th ASEAN MinisterialMeeting on Haze (AMMH) and the first meeting of the participating parties on anagreement for trans-national haze prevention.
