GFMC Update on forest fires in Syria: On Wednesday 27 October 2004 the GFMCreceived requests from FAO Syria to assist the country in combatting forest andplantation fires which started on Monday 26 October 2004. GFMC has activated thecoalition of countries whih participated at the Antalya conference oncooperation in forest fire management in the Eastern mediterranean Region / NearEast. At that time Turkey had already dispatched two fixed-wing aircraft and twohelicopters for assisting Syria to control the fires. Israel indicated to beavailable to receive an official request for assistance.
