Bush Administration Backs Western Governors’ 10-Year Plan to Fight Wildfires

The Bush administration has endorsed a plan that would give Western states and localities more discretion in fighting wildfires. Interior Secretary Gale A. Norton and Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman signed the agreement at an August 12 meeting of the Western Governors’ Association. The heart of the plan is a greater degree of collaboration among federal, state, and local authorities in shifting policy from merely suppressing major fires to preventing them by thinning underbrush and helping communities decrease risks to property.For more on the Governors Plan, visit the SAF website at:
