According to Woody Allshouse, chief deputy director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Northern California has already seen an 80 percent increase in fires from last year, and a 364 percent increase over acres burned by this time in the fire season. Quoted in a 16 June 2001 article in the Sacramento Bee, Allshouse said, “Northern California is in a severe moisture deficiency”, while briefing California Governor Gray Davis on the fire threat.
