ALMOST 2,000 HECTARES ON FIRE IN TAIGA

22 June 2001

Fires are raging on 1,934 hectares of the Far Eastern Taiga. Altogether 57 forest fires have been registered in the region, with about half of them in Khabarovsk Territory.
Altogether 1,059 Taiga fires have broken out in the Russian Far East since the beginning of the fire-prone period. The forest protection service and residents helping to extinguish the fires have managed to localize or fully extinguish 1,002 seats.
Fortunately, most of the fires broke out far from settlements and so far do not constitute a threat to the population. However, the growing area where taiga fires are raging causes alarm to local experts.
