La Red Latinoamericana de Teledetección e Incendios Forestales (RedLaTIF) es una red regional que pretende unir esfuerzos en el campo de la observación y gestión de los incendios forestales en todos los países latinoamericanos. Esta Red está estrechamente unida al programa GOFC/GOLD-Fire (Global Observations of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics), la cual intenta contribuir en cumplir los objetivos de dicho programa.

The National Commission for Space Activities (Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales – CONAE) provides regular updates on high-temperature events representing vegetation fires, current sire situation synthesis, LANDSAT images of very high quality, soil moisture and a list of detailed information of past fire events. Forest Fires in the Bariloche Region

National Fire Management Service, Argentina

Argentina´s National Fire Management Service (Servicio Nacional de Manejo del Fuego SNMF) is coordinated by the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development (Secretaría de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable) . In Argentina, the provinces and National Parks Administration (APN) are in charge of prevention and fighting of wildland fires in there own jurisdiction. At national level, the SNMF integrates, coordinates and supports the actions taken by the provinces, the APN and the federal government.

The Environmental Monitoring Center (NMA) of the Brazilian Agricultural and Range Research Institute (EMBRAPA) and the ECOFORCA team provide a searchable database of archived fire products on the base of NOAA AVHRR images starting 1991 (continuously updated). The weekly maps are geocodified and analized by ECOFORCA – Research and Development, as for location of the burnings, their cause, types of land use burned, the resulting environmental impacts. The Forest Fire Laboratory of the Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil, was established in 1982 and focuses on fire research in forest ecosystem and the relationships between fire, flora and fauna. Research and development also deals with forest fire prevention and methods of fire suppression.

 

ECOFORCE

The ECOFORCE (ECOFORCA – a Brazilian NGO) and the EMBRAPA’s Núcleo de Monitoramento Ambiental-NMA (Environmental Monitoring Center) provide fire maps on the base NOAA AVHRR data processed in Cachoeira Paulista and sent by the National Institute of Spatial Researches , via Internet, to NMA and to ECOFORCE. The weekly maps are geocoded and are searchable by week and region.

 

IBAMA – PREVFOGO

Prevfogo, the National Forest Fire Prevention and Suppression System (Sistema Nacional de Prevenção e Combate aos Incêndios Florestais) was created in 1989 under the coordination of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Ressources (IBAMA) (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Renováveis) to undertake activities of prevention, monitoring, management and suppression of forest and agricultural fires in Brazil, as well as to evaluate the effects on ecosystems, public health and the atmosphere. In 2001 Prevfogo changed into a Specialized Center inside the structure of IBAMA, with technical, administrative and financial autonomy, responsible for national policies on prevention and suppression of forest fires, including activities related to educational campaigns, training, monitoring, research and management of fires.

 

São Paulo University: Monitoring of Transport of Biomass Burning Emissions Over South America

The Atmospheric Sciences Department, University of São Paulo (Departamento de Ciencias Atmosfericas – Universidade de São Paulo) studies atmospheric transport of biomass burning emissions in the Amazon and Central Brazil through a numerical simulation using the atmospheric model RAMS-CSU (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System). A model of gases and particles source emissions is introduced, associated with biomass burning in South America tropical forest and savanna, spatially and temporally distributed and daily assimilated, according to the biomass burning spots defined by remote sensing (GOES-8 ABBA Preliminary Fire Products produced by UW-Madison CIMSS GOES Biomass Burning Monitoring Program, see http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/fire99.cgi). The advection, in a resolved scale, and turbulent transport, in a sub-grid scale, are resolved using RAMS model parameterizations. A transport sub-grid parameterization, associated to wet and deep circulation not explicitly resolved by the model, due ist low spatial resolution, is introduced. Sinks, associated with generic process of removal/transformation of gases/particles, are parameterized and introduced in the mass conservation equation. Products: Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Monoxide (Average at Column), number and size of fires.

The Woods Hole Research Center located in Woodshole, Massachusetts, addresses the great issues of environment through scientific research and education and through applications of science in public affairs.The Center maintains continuing research projects in the tropical rainforest of Brazil, in the boreal forest of Siberia, a very well done section is dealing with the forest fires in Brazil. Extensive information on the fires are offered as well as a study dealing with fire risk maps, a very interesting site.

International Machu Picchu Fire Protection Project

The International Machu Picchu Fire Protection Project is devoted to preserve the natural and archeological environment of Machu Picchu. This site had been damaged by serious wildfires in the past. The idea of the project is to generate a thought current in the global society that attends proactively in the prevention and education against forest fires in the region, to implement the Incident Command System, to integrate to different organizations, public, private, voluntary and professionals that respond to incidents, train professional teams that respond to forest incidents in the region, and develop the necessary logistics for an appropriate administration of incidents.
