Australia — The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is monitoring large swamp areasstill burning near Port Fairy.
The peat swamps are within the 1,000 hectares of land burnt out by a fire atYambuk last week.
The CFA’s Colin Watt says peat can burn for months, and poses the risk offuelling further outbreaks of fire in the area.
He says the swamps will be dampened down ahead of hotter temperaturesexpected tomorrow.
“The local fire brigade will continue to patrol and monitor the area, along with the property owners who are providing us with excellent assistance,so we will be ensuring that fire remains secured and doesn’t start another fire,”he said.
