Fire Learning Network Workshop 4

The fourth workshop of the Fire Learning Network has been scheduled for w-4 December 2003 in the Pensacola (Florida) area. The fourth workshop will focus on monitoring and closing the loop on adaptive management. For more information on the network, and to see products completed to date, go to:

The Fire Learning Network (FLN) is now a proven strategy to address the threats of altered fire regimes in multi-owner public and private landscapes. Participants from 25 landscapes across the U.S. have formed tightly knit project teams making significant progress toward their goals. The two overarching goals of the network are to (1) accelerate ecosystem restoration at a set of high-priority fire-adapted landscapes, and (2) transfer lessons learned at the landscape scale to scientists, managers and key decision-makers who may ultimately bring about larger-scale change. Project teams will present products completed prior to the workshop and receive peer review from workshop participants.
The multi-stakeholder teams have already made significant progress toward achieving their self-defined goals, including:
- Describing the ecosystems of concern and modelling ecological processes
- Developing common goals for fuels management
- Spatially defining the desired future condition of their landscapes and developing alternative restoration strategies
- Developing implementation and funding proposals for treatments
- Developing MOUs or cooperative agreements to address partnership barriers
