On behalf of the IGBP-NES, IUFRO Working Party S4.12.00 (Remote Sensing technology and Geographic Information Systems), Scientific Council on Forest Problems and V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch, we would like to inform on the Workshop “ASSESSMENT METHODS OF FOREST ECOSYSTEM STATUS AND SUSTAINABILITY”. Workshop will take place on August 8-12, 1999, at the V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk. The Workshop is opened to international scientific community.

The main foci of the Workshop are:

Forest system sustainability: conception, mechanisms, relations with environment and association structure, indicators, research methods.

Anthropogenic transformation of forests, global and regional ecological problems and biospheric functions of forest ecosystems.

Integration of GIS-technologies and remote sensing data in forest state monitoring study.

Ecosystem management of forest utilization as the basis for forest conservation and of sustaining their stable development.
Language
Working language is English.
Papers
Key-note, invited and voluntary oral presentations as well as posters are foreseen.
Submission of Abstracts
Those interested in giving presentations at the Workshop should submit abstracts by February 1, 1999 to Dr. Elena Muratova. Abstracts should be submited in both forms: paper and electronic. Two hard copies may be sent by regular mail or fax. An abstract should be typed with one-and-a half-space, 1 page, 30 lines, with top, bottom, left and right margins of 25 mm. The abstract should include the paper title, initials and last names of the author(s), affiliation(s), address(es) centered and with a blank line between them as well as between affiliation and the main text. We ask to present address, affiliation, phone, fax, E-mail of every co-author. Electronic versions in ASCII text ( *.txt) format only may be sent as either a computer file on diskette (mailed with the paper copy) or via E-mail.The organizing Committee will select presentations on the basis of the abstracts and will notify the authors by March 1, 1999. The accepted abstracts will have been published by the Workshop.

Detailed information on proceegings will be available in the Second Circular.
Field Tour
It is plannned to organize the scientific excursion to Bolshaja Murta leskhos (forestry unit), 120 km far Krasnoyarsk, to get acquianted with experimental forest objects and methods of using GIS in forestry practice. A tour to the Northern forests of Siberia being effected by the oil-gas complex can be organized for scientists who wish to see them. The cost of this tour will be determined in the second circular.
Travel to Krasnoyarsk
You can come to Krasnoyarsk via Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk. One of the best ways is from Frankfurt to Novosibirisk and flight or train from Novosibirisk to Krasnoyarsk. Krasnoyarsk – the largest industrial, scientific and cultural centre of South Siberia (about 1 mln people) – is the capital of the most actively operating forestry region of Siberia. This will be the best chance for you to see forests of Siberia.
Accomodations
Different types of accomodation are available in Krasnoyarsk. Price is about $ 50-80 per day dependence on hotel quality.

For preliminary registration use the form attached. If you present a paper, please, inform us. Presentations will be oral and poster. Please, complete this form (for every co-author) and return by February 1, 1999, to Dr. Elena Muratova. You can use E-mail, ordinary mail and fax.
Registration Fee
Registration fee for participants 100 US $ (not included field tours) Registration fee for accompaning persons and students 50 US $. The registration fee covers publishing abstracts, conference materials, one copy of abstracts, cultural events and parties.
