Second announcement of the 3rd International Symposium on Asian Tropical Forest Management: Impacts of Fire and Human Activities on Forest Ecosystems in the Tropics. This symposium will be held by The Tropical Rain Forest Research Center of Mulawarman University (PUSREHUT-UNMUL) in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, 20-23 September 1999, and commemorates the anniversary of UNMUL. The symposium is supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture and by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Fire Ecology Research Group of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Freiburg University, and the Rehabilitation Research Group at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) are collaborating in the symposium.

Abstracts of papers (not exceeding 200 words) should be received no later than 30 June 1999 (by fax, in addition by post or e-mail as a safeguard against unclear facsimile text). The full manuscript should be submitted one week before the first day of the symposium (one hard copy and a copy on diskette, preferably in rich text format or Microsoft Word).

Rationale

Tropical forests are a favorable environment for much of the Earth’s plant and animal life, and contribute to stabilizing the global environment. However, despite repeated warnings in recent decades, the tropical forests continue to shrink and suffer further degradation each year. There are two major causes: forest fires and human activity, including unsuitable forestry practices. Huge areas of forest in Indonesia have been destroyed by fires in the past ten years: 50,000 ha in 1987, 120,000 ha in 1991, 160,000 ha in 1994, 260,000 ha in 1997, and 600,000 ha in 1998. In addition, 44% of Indonesian forests are designated as timber concession areas, and annual log production has remained around 25 million m3 for at least ten years.

Forest fires and human activity affect not only the biota of the forest, but also the neighboring aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric environments, and it will therefore require the cooperation of many academic disciplines to develop new methods of forest management. Scientists working on a joint research project undertaken at PUSREHUT (Tropical Forest Research Center) by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture and the Japan International Cooperation Agency have been studying these topics for fifteen years. Exchange of information on these topics is vital. We would like to provide the opportunity for a discussion on the development of sustainable forest management in tropical Asia, where forest degradation is progressing steadily.

Sessions

The symposium will be subdivided into the following sessions:

  1. Forest fires in the tropics. (Characteristics, monitoring, forest management for fire prevention, etc.)

  2. The impacts of forest fires on the terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments, hydrology, etc.

  3. The impacts of forest fires on forest animals, plants, and fungi and the recovery process.

  4. Techniques for rehabilitating degraded forests.

Excursion

As part of the symposium, an excursion will be made to the Bukit Soeharto Education Forest (BSEF) of Mulawarman University, for a field discussion. The BSEF is located on low hills on the east coast of East Kalimantan, between Balikpapan and Samarinda, where the original vegetation is lowland dipterocarp forest. Before it was designated a protected forest in 1979, the forest had been logged sporadically by the local inhabitants, and selectively by timber companies. The large forest fires that occurred in East Kalimantan in 1982-83 and 1998 burned the BSEF. Scientists have been studying the forests in the BSEF since 1985 and have been observing the effects of the 1998 forest fires and the early recovery of burned vegetation. Some of these scientists have started to rehabilitate burned sites. We would like to present our research activities for an on-site discussion.

How to reach Samarinda from Jakarta

Both Garuda Indonesia and Bouraq Indonesia offer two flights daily from Jakarta to Balikpapan. The journey takes about 2 hours and the round trip costs Rp. 2,150,000. Approx. current exchange rate: US $1 = Rp. 8,500.

For travel to Samarinda from Balikpapan, the Organizing Committee will arrange a car for times when many participants arrive in Balikpapan. Any participants who miss the car should take a taxi. Taxis are usually found at the airport following the arrival of most flights from Jakarta.

Registration Fee

The symposium registration fee is US $60 (with proceedings) for foreign participants, Rp. 100,000 (with proceedings) for representatives of institutions and companies in Indonesia, Rp. 50,000 (without proceedings) for Indonesian government officers, and Rp. 25,000 (without proceedings) for students. The registration fee is payable at the time of registration in Samarinda.

Instructions to authors

  1. Manuscripts should be written in English. They are expected to be less than 10 printed pages in length, including tables and figures. The number of words per page as published will be about 550, if the page does not contain tables and figures.

  2. A typescript copy of the manuscript must be submitted. Type should be double-spaced on one side of good quality 280 x 210 mm or A4 size paper with a wide margin (ca. 3 cm).

  3. In addition to typescript copies, authors using digital files are requested to submit their work on a diskette or floppy disk. The file should preferably be in Microsoft Word, on a 3.5-inch diskette.

  4. Arrange the manuscript in the order listed below and number all pages consecutively in the lower center.

  1. Title of the paper, names of authors and institutions, with addresses.

  2. Abstract should be a lucid digest of the paper, not exceeding 200 words.

  3. Present the text in sections under the headings Introduction, Materials/Study site and Methods, Results, and Discussion.

  4. Acknowledgments may be to persons who assisted in the study and to grant-giving bodies.

  5. References: References cited in the text should be on separate sheets, arranged alphabetically according to the last names of the authors. Text references should be made by the author’s names (for three or more authors use et al.) followed by the year of publication.

  1. Legends for figures: Legends should explain the meaning of the figures without reference to the text. The legends should be grouped on a separate sheet.

  1. Tables: The presentation of the same data in both graphical and tabular form should be avoided. Tables must be typed on separate sheets. They should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers and each should bear a short title. Column headings should be brief, with units of measurement. Vertical lines should not be used to separate columns.

  2. Figures (including photographs): All figures (including photographs) should be numbered consecutively. The size of published figures will be less than 200 x 140 mm for a full page. Drawings should be in India ink and photographs on glossy paper (black and white only). Please indicate where the figures should be inserted in the text. Magnification should be indicated by a scale line. In other cases, the author should state the magnification.

  3. Abbreviations and units: SI units (meter, kilogram, etc.) should be used wherever possible. Use only standard abbreviations.
