About the Conference
The overall conference title is “Building Resilience”, designed to reflect a critical fire management objective of our time: changing patterns of wildland fire and other stressors will demand resiliency within our landscapes, communities, and fire management organizations.
The program is designed around four main themes: Anticipating change; Designing resilient fire management systems; Defining and managing resilient landscapes; and Planning smarter, safer, resilient communities.
Abstracts are now being accepted for oral presentations and abstracts (deadline: 30 June 2016):
1. Anticipating change
Scenarios, monitoring, prediction tools
- Climate change and extreme events
- Increasing fire complexity
- Fire behaviour, danger and risk assessment
2. Designing resilient fire management systems
Shaping the landscape to facilitate successful fire management outcomes, strategies, tactics and practices to cope with increasing fire complexity and extreme events

- Human factors: safety, wellness, recruitment, decision making

3. Defining and managing resilient landscapes
Understanding and managing for fire resilient landscapes

Workshops
In addition to the main program, a series of optional workshops are being developed to provide opportunities for small-group interaction with software model developers around key fire behaviour and fire ecology topics. Workshops are limited to 40 participants each, and will be held on Monday, 24 October and Friday, 28 October. Workshop attendance is an additional $25 per participant per workshop.
The workshop selection is still being finalized; at the present time, the following workshops are being offered:
Monday, 24 October 2016
- Burn probability modeling with Burn P3 (13:00 – 15:00)
- Overview of the new Ontario grassfire behaviour model (13:00 – 15:00)
- Introduction to FuelCalcBC (15:00 -17:00)
- Using FOFEM for building prescribed fire prescriptions (15:00 – 17:00)
