Climate Change & Forest Fires in the Mediterranean Basin: Risk Reduction & Management

The objectives of the conference were to share scientific knowledge and practical experience concerning measures required in dealing with forest fires prevention and ecological rehabilitation under climate change, including offering a scientific ground for policy making. The organization of the conference was led by the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection in cooperation with the Jewish National Fund – KKL in the frame of the CIRCLE – 2 ERA network. The event took place in Nir Etzion, Mount Carmel, Israel, 24-26 January 2012.

The IV Simposio Nacional sobre Incendios Forestales was held 2-4 November 2011, La Nucía, Alicante, Spain.

International Conference on Fire Behaviour and Risk Modelling 

The International Conference was held in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy, 4-6 October 2011. Topics of the conference include; ‘European Projects on Forest Fires’, ‘Modelling Fire Behaviour and Risk’, ‘Climate and Fire’ and ‘Fire Risk at Wildland Urban Interfaces’.

Seventh Mediterranean Combustion Symposium

The Seventh Mediterranean Combustion Symposium was held in Sardinia, Italy, at Chia Laguna Conference Center in Domus de Maria (Cagliari), 11-15 September 2011.

12th European Heathland Workshop

The 12th European Heathland Workshop (12th EHW) was held in Spain and Portugal. This Workshop was organized 12-18 June 2011 by the Heathland Ecology Group of the University of León (Spain) in collaboration with researchers from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Portugal.

MEDPINE 4

Inaugurated in 1999, the cycle of MEDPINE conferences have already travelled to Mt Carmel in Israel, Chania in Greece and Bari in Italy. MEDPINE 4 was organised by the Mediterranean Forest Ecology Research Unit of INRA, Avignon. It took place 6-10 June 2011, Petit Louvre, Avignon, France.

The Second Mediterranean Forest Week (Avignon, France, 5-8 April 2011)

The 2011 Mediterranean Forests Week will bring together relevant stakeholders working on/for Mediterranean forests and forestry: EFIMED, FAO and its Silva Mediterranea Committee, AIFM, ARCMED, MFMN, GTZ, COFOR, USSE. The Ministry of Agriculture of France, the PACA region and INRA will host such initiative aiming at providing a dynamic platform where the scientific community, the policy-makers and key stakeholders meet to network and debate around strategic policy-relevant questions. The Forest Fire Working Group Meeting will be held on 5 April 2011.

Workshop on Assessment of Forest Fire Risks and Innovative Strategies for Fire Prevention in Europe (Rhodes, Greece, 4-7 May 2010)
The workshop was co-organized by the Greek General Directorate of Development and Protection of Forests and Natural Environment, the Department of Forests of Republic of Cyprus, the Union of South European Foresters (USSE), the Ministerial Conference of the Protection of Forests in Europe (FOREST EUROPE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Silva Mediterranea Committee. The objectives of the workshop were to review the current national forest fire prevention systems in European Countries, to identify innovative strategies, best available practices and possible policy instruments, and to develop policy conclusions and recommendations in relation to forest fire prevention in Europe.

Workshop on Forest Fires in the Mediterranean Region: Prevention and Regional Cooperation (2008)

The Workshop was organized in Sabaudia, Italy, from 12 to 15 May 2008, by the Corpo Forestale dello Stato (CFS) of Italy and FAO, with the support of theSilva Mediterranea Working Group on Forest Fires and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy.
