Forest Fires in Chile

GFMC note: This image acquired on May 4, 2014, by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite. In order to show and assess a consequences of the fire these images are published in this earlier current update.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board of Terra satellite acquired this image of the large fire affecting the forest-city interface of the city and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valparaiso on 13 April 2014.
A long smoke plume can be seen drifting North-West by the strong wind prescence.

On the early hours of 13 April 2014, a fire started on the hills of the coastal city of Valparaiso, dangerously near from the inhabited areas. As the hours passed, the still uncotroled fire, razed 2.000 homes, and 12 lifes and forced more that 10.000 people to evacuate to safer areas.
